Third Sunday in Lent A, March 19, 2017

Pensive Lent to you all.

One:  O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

All: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
One: Christ who offered the outcast eternal life and living water meets us here.
All: Outcasts in our own way, we are offered the same gifts.
One: Let us praise the one who gives us hope through eternal love.
All: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

O Lord, you collect imperfect people, and we thank you for that. You see promise in those whom others dismiss, and deep down we know we need to see as you do. Help us listen to your servants today. Help us trust that you will provide us with life and meaning. Help us hear your word, quenching our thirst for your holiness like a long drink of cool water down a parched throat. May we become your imperfect servants, too. Amen.

O that today you would listen to God’s voice! Do not harden your hearts, but open them, pouring out your wrongdoings and being washed clean. Let us together confess our sins.

Gracious God, you do not forget your broken people. You do not forget outcasts and sinners. You love us, and desperately want us to live anew in you. We have done such wrong, O Lord, that we fear to name it. We have also not done things that we know we should have. We have neglected your people, forgotten your name, and spread hatred and fear of those not like us. We are so far from loving as you do. Please help us appreciate you and live into your promise for us. Please help us appreciate others and help them live into their promise in you as well. Forgive us, we pray. Amen.

Christ said to the Samaritan woman, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” Dear ones, you are also being offered this living water. Come, drink, and be made whole. Know that in the name of Jesus Christ, giver of living water, your sins are forgiven. Now go and sin no more.

The Israelites were not in the most ideal of situations, but over and over again they forgot what they had – life in you. Let us learn from them and be grateful for what we have and give back in abundance from what we have been given. Let us bring forth our tithes and offerings.

O Holy God, we do not want to be known for quarreling and testing you. We pray that we may instead trust you and work with you. May what we have brought forth today, may all that we are, go towards your will for us, your will for our community. Amen.
